Welcome
Welfare
Everyday along the streets of Soweto one sees horses and carts used as transport. They are the vehicles of scrap metal collectors, furniture movers and, despite recent electrification, coal vendors, who sell coal to those who cannot afford electricity. For the past 7 years Enos has worked through the SPCA and DPSA, to provide for the needs of these horses. Identifying ill-treated animals, inoculating, de-worming and shoeing have been part of his work. By his example, he has taught owners to respect and care for their horses.
![]() The Soweto Equestrian Centre will extend this care and also provide respite stabling for working horses. Feed companies generously provide subsidize feed for needy horses, particularly in winter. Winters in Johannesburg can be cold and wet and the summers very hot. ![]() The best way to help the cart horses is to help their owners make a good living and to realise that the welfare of their animals is in their own best interest. The Soweto Equestrian Centre will help provide the cart horse owners with proper carts and saddlery will be provided and maintained. Carts will be sponsored and used as mobile advertising. ![]() The services offered at the Centre will ease the lives of the many horses of the township. |
