Skills for Sport, Craftsmanship and Business
![]() A key objective of the Centre is to help the local community to see the sporting and business opportunities that well looked after horses can bring. Having access to a centre of equestrian excellence, in the heart of the township, will bring this dream into reality. The centre will offer subsidized riding lessons to both township children and adults. It is hoped that some of these pupils will go onto to compete in the Centers sporting programme. For the more enthusiastic, dressage, vaulting and jumping lessons will also be offered. We've teamed up with World Horse Welfare to train farriers and saddle makers. A five year training program has begun and the first class of students graduated in May 2009. The second year intake will start in October 09. Nutrition, animal husbandry, disease prevention and treatment will be taught particularly to the local cart horse owners and operators. School holiday activities will be held at the Centre to encourage township children in healthy pursuits and to promote the care of animals and an interest in horses and riding The therapeutic benefits of putting horses together with sick and disabled children are well known. These advantages are not currently available to the children of Soweto. Local organisations providing care for the disabled and underprivileged will be invited to use the centre for therapy riding. ![]() To bring the greatest benefit to the community, we aim to help bring the skills training and highlight the business opportunities to work in the equestrian industry. We’ve joined forces with a world famous UK equestrian charity, World Horse Welfare, to run five years of courses to train new farriers and saddle maker. The first 24 students began their training programme in September 2008 in the newly completed on site training centre. ![]() |
